Haywood County has 9 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools as well as a number of private schools. Total public school enrollment in 2006 was 7899 students. Haywood County public schools have consistently performed above state and regional averages in all academic measures. About one-half of the county’s High school students take the SAT each year. Of those taking the test, students have performed better than the state average with an average score of 1561. Every school in Haywood County has Internet access. Higher Education: Haywood Community College is regarded as one of the finest two-year institutions in the country. With an enrollment of approximately 2,200 students, the school offers over 55 curricular programs of study and continually strives to develop new programs based on changing technologies and the workforce needs of the county. Augmenting the college is the Regional High Technology Center, a $4.0 million facility geared to provide training in electronic and manufacturing technologies. Additionally, Western Carolina University in Cullowhee and the University of North Carolina at Asheville, both a part of the state university system, are a mere 30-minute drive from Haywood County.
