Historic Downtown Hendersonville
In the late 1700’s, Revolutionary War Soldier William Mills settled Henderson County, which was established as a county in 1838 and named after Leonard Henderson, chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. As the county seat, Hendersonville was incorporated in 1847.Hendersonville, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, includes an old-time Main Street with unique specialty shops and restaurants. The street plan of Hendersonville’s historic downtown was laid out in the mid-1800s and its buildings are mostly 19th and 20th century Neo-Classical brick or stone.
The site of the Historic Hendersonville Depot welcomed the first steam engine in 1897. Between 1911 and 1968, the Carolina Special ran from Charleston to Cincinnati and made stops at the depot. Today, the depot has been restored to its original deep yellow color and features a Southern Railways caboose and model railroad.
The west side of Hendersonville is a National Register Historic District developed in the 1910s and 1920s that features Colonial Revival and bungalow style homes. To learn more about Historic Hendersonville visit: http://hendersoncountychamber.org
